This month we are marking a century since WW1, in memory of this we wanted to bring your attention to the contribution Berkhamsted made to the war effort during this time.
In preparation for WW1 the common next to Ashridge Forest was used as a training ground, it was considered ideal terrain for military training. More than 12,000 men camped there. Of the men who trained here more than 2,000 were killed, with 1/4 having no grave.
As we live in a progressively gender equal society and as a team of largely women, we should not forget the brave women during this time too. At the start of the 19thcentury not only did we enter WW1, we also opened the door to women in the workplace. Whilst the men went to battle, large numbers of women volunteered in the munition factories and weapons manufactories to assist with the war effort.
Lest we forget our brave men and women who laid down their lives in the First World War.
